Bellingham Arts Academy for Youth is proud to present 13 the Musical July 12-14, 2019 at the BAAY Theatre in Downtown Bellingham This special production is an entirely student-led process. Co-directors Brody Buck and Adaryn Healy, ages 16 and 15 respectively, were eager to lead a team of their peers alongside choreographer Meixing Rain in this memorable, coming-of-age musical. Featuring a catchy rock score by Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown, this show follows preteen Evan Goldman as he navigates a new middle school in the wake of his parents’ divorce. From popularity contests, awkward crushes, and developing confidence in oneself, 13 the Musical explores timeless subject matter about growing up. It offers meaningful validation and an opportunity for young people to see themselves in a piece of art. For adults, it provides a nostalgic look back, as well as a healthy reflection on the adolescent experience. Founded in 2006, Bellingham Arts Academy for Youth is a nonprofit arts education organization that offers quality instruction in theater, choir, dance, music, and visual arts to youth, ages 3-17. A beloved fixture in Bellingham's thriving arts community, the organization has produced over 100 musicals to date. In addition, BAAY strives to reach new members of the community through its other two branches: the BAAY Preschool (baay.org/preschool) and the BAAY EduArts enrichment program (baay.org/eduarts), which offers over 20 arts classes per quarter to elementary students throughout Whatcom County.
