Classic Comedies from the 1930s — 1950s
Sunday mornings at 11:00 AM.
Screwball comedies, as they came to be called, found their origin during the Great Depression, a time when people, more than ever, needed a laugh and an escape, and the classic screwballs of that era remain some of the most delightful films ever made: quick-witted, fast-talking, hilarious romantic farces, often a battle of the sexes where gender roles are flipped or questioned.
These comedies also featured some of the biggest stars of the era -- Claudette Colbert, Carole Lombard, Katharine Hepburn, Rosalind Russell, Barbara Stanwyck, Irene Dunne, Cary Grant, Fred MacMurray, Gary Cooper, Clark Gable -- and it's hard to imagine any stars of our day even remotely matching their ability to speak such witty fast dialogue with such ease nor many actors today having the same grace and hilarity with which those classic stars threw themselves so wholeheartedly into such wonderfully ridiculous situations.
So come join us once a month for our Screwball Sundays at 11 am: we've got mimosas on deck and a brunchtime serving of onscreen hilarity, hijinx, and romance.
