Enter the Middle Housing Design Competition and Win Cash Prizes!

The Whatcom Housing Alliance is thrilled to announce the launch of the Middle Housing Design Competition, where innovation meets community transformation! As the City of Bellingham begins to adopt Middle Housing, this competition aims to ignite dialogue about the importance of these diverse housing options, including townhomes, duplexes, triplexes, and beyond.

Participants are challenged to reimagine living spaces in our community and to showcase how Middle Housing can address the housing shortage in Whatcom County. Participants are tasked with creating constructible designs that seamlessly blend affordability, sustainability, and innovation.

“This is an opportunity for design and construction professionals at all levels – including interns, licensed architects, and builders – to leave an inspiring mark on urban landscapes and contribute to the evolution of housing options,” said Scott Pelton, Manager of the Whatcom Housing Alliance.

Participants can demonstrate their expertise in architectural creativity, sustainable design, and community integration. Funded by the National Association of Realtors and supported by local sponsors Julian & Company, and Hindman Construction, the contest allows participants to:

  • Compete for the chance to earn cash prizes that acknowledge exceptional design prowess.
  • Showcase designs on the Whatcom Housing Alliance website, garnering recognition and exposure within the design community and beyond.
  • Be at the forefront of shaping modern living spaces and responding to the evolving needs of communities.
  • Contribute to the creation of housing solutions that promote walkability, community connectivity, and access to essential services.

More information, including detailed submission guidelines, can be accessed at whatcomhousingalliance.org. All designers must indicate their intention to submit a proposal by registering by August 30th. All design proposals must be submitted by November 1st.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
