Dewey Griffin Subaru Partners with Blue Skies for Children to Provide Drivers’ Education Scholarships

The team at Dewey Griffin Subaru is pleased to sponsor (5) Drivers’ Education Scholarships for low-income, homeless, and foster youth. These funds will enable Blue Skies for Children to award an additional (5) scholarships, doubling the number of teens that are awarded scholarships in 2023.

Annually, Blue Skies for Children provides scholarships for students to participate in a professionally licensed Drivers Education Program that may otherwise be unaffordable. The application process is competitive and the Blue Skies for Children Board of Directors reviews essays, letters of recommendation, and high school transcripts as part of its selection process. The gift of $2,000 from Dewey Griffin Subaru will provide up to $400 per awardee to take part in valuable drivers’ education, helping them learn how to safely navigate road rules, understand the expectations of being a licensed driver, and increase confidence.

“The whole team at Dewey Griffin is excited to be a part of a program that helps kids in need learn responsible driving skills and add a driver to their family unit,” said Dewey Griffin Subaru owner, Alan Meyer. “Blue Skies Drivers Education Scholarship Program has proven to help our local youth become competent drivers – we know that for some families it means help with getting someone to their doctors’ appointment or allows the new driver transportation to sporting events or other after-school activities or even their first job!”

Interested teens, 15-17 years old, can review qualifications and download an application at https://www.blueskiesforchildren.org/programs--applications.html

Applications are currently open and are reviewed and awarded on a rolling basis throughout the year.

Established in 1997, Blue Skies was created out of a need in our local community. In 2002, Blue Skies became a 501(c)(3) and hired its first executive director. Its mission is to raise hope and self-esteem by sponsoring enrichment programs and other essentials for homeless, low-income, and foster children in Whatcom and Skagit Counties.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
