Annual International Plowing Match to be Held in Lynden

The International Plowing Match will return on Saturday, May 20 from 11 am - 3 pm. The event, which was established in 1942, showcases the mighty draft horse and the women and men guiding them. The event is open to all ages and takes place at Berthusen Park. Access is from West Badger Road, a half-mile west of Berthusen Road. Admission and parking are free and there are restrooms available onsite. JT’s Smokin BBQ food truck will be on hand for lunch from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm.

This year’s event features two-horse teams using traditional horse-drawn plowing methods. Competitors are judged on various aspects of their plowed lots, including best crown, best finish, best in and out, and best firmness and packing. Awards and Hall of Fame presentation will take place on the field at 4 pm following the Sugar Shack Ice Cream truck which will be open from 3 - 4pm.

The Northwest Washington Fair and local businesses continue to sponsor the event, which is presented by the International Plowing Association, an active group of volunteers consisting of multi-generational plowing families and community members interested in preserving the tradition. For a list of previous winners and more information check out nwwafair.com.

The event is presented by LTI, Inc. and Northwest Propane.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
