From Sea to Me: Bellingham SeaFeast to Celebrate Its Seventh Year

The signature festival will showcase the bounty of the Salish Sea with a Native Exhibit, maritime education, passport booths, cooking demonstrations, native dancers and speakers, and more.

The SeaFeast story began in 1996 when the City of Bellingham, the Lummi Nation, and the Port of Bellingham came together to honor our maritime heritage with a signature festival on Bellingham Bay. Now Bellingham’s waterfront celebration is back on Saturday, October 14 & Sunday, October 15, 2023, at Zuanich Point Park.

“Being able to provide a festival that includes everyone from all sectors of the waterfront is what makes the growing evolution of SeaFeast happen,” said Kevin Coleman, SeaFeast Program Director. “I am so proud of what we have accomplished. In addition to the festival, we have created a larger awareness of what SeaFeast can be year-round. This year's festival will be unique and different than in years past. That's the beauty of SeaFeast. Each tide brings new waves with new experiences for us all to celebrate and give honor to where we come from and where we are going. There's a place for everyone and I look forward to an incredible SeaFeast weekend!”

SeaFeast will host a Children of the Setting Sun Production exhibit, showcasing the deep history and culture of the People of the Salish Sea and the Story Pole Campaign with Lummi and Nooksack artist, Jason LaClair. The popular Keep It Simple Seafood program and cooking demonstrations will happen on Saturday, October 14 in the Zuanich Park Boathouse.

“I’m excited to work with SeaFeast to bring the Keep It Simple Seafood program back to Dockside,” said Cari Chan, Executive Director of Bellingham Dockside Market.  “It’s a very popular cooking demonstration program with our customers who want to learn more about preparing seafood. Our fisherfolks love to have their products featured as well!”

New for this year, SeaFeast will have an Industry Square, featuring the businesses and individuals that contribute to Bellingham’s working waterfront and bring to us the bounty of the Salish Sea.

“I am excited to help connect our working industries that provide us high-quality seafood, with the folks who enjoy it at our Industry Square Tent,” said Dan Tucker, Program Director for Working Waterfront Coalition of Whatcom County.

About SeaFeast

The mission of SeaFeast is to celebrate our maritime culture & heritage, thriving working waterfront, enjoyment & conservation of our water resources, commercial fishing & seafood industries, and the culinary bounty of our corner of the Pacific Northwest. Bellingham SeaFeast is the only Whatcom County festival held during National Seafood Month, and the only non-profit hosting year-round workshops, educational programs, and events that promote the healthy benefits of seafood and to rejoice in our working waterfront.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
