Second Nature: The Story of a Naturalist’s Garden

Village Books in Fairhaven is hosting a FREE virtual event on Saturday, April 5th at 11am with Susie White, a popular English garden writer and naturalist who recently published her seventh book, Second Nature: The Story of a Naturalist’s Garden.

The topic focuses on how the author and her husband David created a garden to blend with a remote landscape in the North East of England, and to benefit local wildlife — everything from moths and bees, to voles and nesting birds. Located on a similar latitude to the Pacific Northwest, Susie’s natural garden shares many common plant and wildlife species with the PNW. She will also address the universal themes of soil preparation, composting, and biodiversity.

Participating in the event is Bellingham garden owner Paige Lanham of The Garden Spot on Alabama Street. Paige will interview Susie to ask questions of particular interest to PNW gardeners.

Susie’s book is available in paperback at Village Books in Fairhaven and Lynden. Event registration details are in the link below and can also be found at www.villagebooks.com (Events): https://www.eventbrite.com/e/susie-white-the-story-of-a-naturalists-garden-free-virtual-event-tickets-1247443800989

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
