The road to Artist Point (the final section of SR 542) and Highway 20 (starting at Ross Dam Trailhead) are both closed for the season.

Kintsugi – Mending broken pottery with gold

Kintsugi is the Japanese art of mending broken pottery with gold. A world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection — a way of living life with an authentic appreciation for the beauty to be found in what is, just as it is; wabi sabi. During workshops led by Jen, participants will safely break a piece of pottery and then mend it using a modern kintsugi technique. By the end, each person will have crafted their own kintsugi piece of art to take home. All materials will be provided, including a handmade piece of pottery made by Jen to break and repair. All levels are welcome.

Participants are welcome to bring in additional pieces for repair. Jen can make a “diagnosis” of the piece to see if it’s a good candidate for Kintsugi. Depending on the timing of the workshop, participants may have time to complete the repair on their additional pieces. While materials are non-toxic and non-staining, please don’t wear anything precious.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
