The road to Artist Point (the final section of SR 542) and Highway 20 (starting at Ross Dam Trailhead) are both closed for the season.

Outdoor Skills: Fire & Breadmaking with Northwest Natura

Come out and enjoy an afternoon learning survival fire lighting and baking bread over a campfire with Northwest Natura! This course is designed to be highly engaging with hands-on activities. Here’s what you can expect from this class:

Opportunities with Guidance on the following: - Coaching and practicing fire lighting with a ferro rod and/or flint and steel. - Independent foraging; locating materials for fire making. - Craft your own fire without a lighter using foraged materials. - Learn my outdoor bread recipe to share with your friends and family. - Preparing and baking (and eating!) 3 loaves between 3 small groups at camp.

I will direct but maintain a hands-off approach with this class so you can successfully make a fire in damp conditions and bake outdoors on your own in the future without guidance. At every NWN class there is a sense of community. Expect bonding, laughter, and total joy in the woods!

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
