The road to Artist Point (the final section of SR 542) and Highway 20 (starting at Ross Dam Trailhead) are both closed for the season.

Travelogue: Up Close and Personal with the Brown Bears of Katmai Alaska

Would you get off a boat in the wilds of Alaska and walk toward the largest bears in the world outside of polar bears, armed only with a camera and a guide? Knowing her love of wildlife photography, Janice's husband prompted her to take this adventure with him and two close friends to the Katmai National Park and Wilderness Preserve.

The Katmai Wilderness Lodge is located along a wild Alaskan coastline, on the opposite side of Katmai National Park from the more famous Brooks Falls. Isolated and remote, this little known gem offers rewards of a lifetime. As the Katmai coastal brown bears now sleep in hibernation, come see their photographs and hear the tales of their daily lives once they emerge from their winter dens.

Fascinating, fun and entertaining, this is a bear talk you don't want to miss. Janice and her husband Bob have made Bellingham their home since 1984. Photography has been a life long hobby for Janice who believes photography can bring understanding to our world. Also a member of Toastmasters International, Janice loves to tell others first-hand stories about the bears and wildlife of Alaska.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
