The road to Artist Point (the final section of SR 542) and Highway 20 (starting at Ross Dam Trailhead) are both closed for the season.

Know Before You Go: Wilderness Rescue Resources and What to Expect

What happens when you need a rescue in the wilderness? Who shows up? What do they do? How do they manage a situation? Do you have to pay for a rescue? Will a helicopter come? Who is in charge? How will they find me?

Wilderness rescue, search and rescue and mountain rescue are complicated topics. This is because they don't fit easily into one box. It's different everywhere you go. In this seminar, we will discuss how rescue operations work locally, how they work in other jurisdictions, and how they work internationally. In addition to that, we'll talk about the complicated politics of search and rescue operations in a wilderness setting.

This will be a presentation that includes the opportunity for questions. Come on in and grab a drink (we have soda and beer), and talk to a professional international guide and mountain rescue volunteer about these important topics!

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
