Thomas Bancroft - Beyond the Wonder: An Ecologist's View of Wild Alaska

Join us in the Readings Gallery to welcome longtime birder and naturalist Thomas Bancroft for a discussion on his book, Beyond the Wonder: An Ecologist's View of Alaska. Thomas Bancroft has been a lifelong birder and naturalist. Washington State University Press recently published his book Beyond the Wonder: An Ecologist’s View of Wild Alaska. The Press called his book “a beautiful meditation on nature—one that highlights the importance of untamed places and the role they play in crafting a better world.” He holds a Ph.D. in Biology and an M.A. in Zoology from the University of South Florida. His research focused on birds and their conservation.

Thomas served in leadership roles for several conservation organizations, where he championed the use of scientific information in U.S. public lands policy and stewardship decisions and was often interviewed for TV, radio, and print media. He is a frequent speaker and writes regularly for the Mountaineers and others.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
