John Egbert - Bearings

Join Village Books in welcoming naturalist and humanist, John Egbert to Readings Gallery for his new book, Bearings! In Bearings, John Egbert, naturalist and humanist, reflects on family, chance encounters with people, wildflowers, birds, and other wildlife and wild places. Occasionally John interrupts his wide-ranging explorations to dig into linguistics. From idiosyncratic South American poems to explorations of New Mexico deserts, rivers, and lakes, and most recently, the Pacific Northwest, John's personal stories and short poems run hard through his curiosity and reflection.

This book presents a collection of whim and wonder with a need for grounding; a meeting with diverse people and natural phenomena. John Egbert is a teacher, naturalist, fly fisher, and gardener. He grew up in an Ohio village, spend 45 years in New Mexico, and is now living in Bellingham.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
