Northwest Natura Presents Botany 101 - Herbarium Journal with Wildflowers

Please join botanist, Jazmen Yoder, for this unique field trip that combines art and science in learning the botanical terms for patterns found in nature. This course is designed to be memorable and engaging with hands-on activities and a fun walk through the woods collecting flowers for pressing and preserving in a large art pad provided to you with tuition.

Our activities will include: Plant Identification (a stroll through the woods), Flower collection and pressing Arts and crafts with flowers, Herbarium journaling, Learning botanical terminology (Botany 101), Labeling and defining patterns and observations. There are so many ways to generally describe a leaf’s shape and growth patterns, and there are unique flower patterns to learn too! There are scientific terms that botanists use that you will learn in this class that will help you recognize plant families and individual species. I’ll make it fun and easy to learn.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
