Blue Skies for Children Introduces New Programs Manager

Blue Skies for Children is thrilled to announce the appointment of Melissa Stevenson as our new Programs Manager. Melissa joins us with over 12 years of experience in education, program coordination, and relationship building, bringing a wealth of knowledge and a deep commitment to supporting youth and families.

Melissa's diverse background in special education and program management makes her a valuable addition to our team. She has dedicated her career to breaking down barriers and promoting equitable access to education and resources. Her experience ranges from launching innovative business start-ups focused on job development for young adults to mentoring individuals with disabilities, and she has consistently demonstrated a passion for creating inclusive environments.

Melissa’s educational background includes a Master of Education in Special Education from Grand Canyon University and a Bachelor of Arts in Recreation with an emphasis in Therapeutic Recreation from Western Washington University. She is also certified as a Community Instructor by the State of Washington and has completed various continuing education courses in diversity, equity, and inclusion.

At Blue Skies for Children, Melissa will be responsible for overseeing our distribution and enrichment programs, ensuring that we continue to raise hope and self-esteem for the youth and families of Whatcom and Skagit Counties. Her leadership will be instrumental in expanding our reach and impact, and we are confident that her contributions will be invaluable to our mission.

"I am excited to join Blue Skies for Children and to be part of an organization that shares my passion for inclusive and equitable service," said Melissa Stevenson. "I look forward to working with the team to continue making a difference in the lives of the children and families we serve."

Please join us in welcoming Melissa Stevenson to Blue Skies for Children. We are eager to see the positive changes she will bring to our organization and the community.

Established in 1997, Blue Skies was created out of a need in our local community. In 2002, Blue Skies became a 501(c)(3) and hired its first executive director. Its mission is to raise hope and self-esteem by sponsoring enrichment programs and other essentials for homeless, low-income and foster children in Whatcom and Skagit Counties.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
