The first couple years I saw advertisements for the "Old Settlers Picnic" in Ferndale, WA, I wondered "How old do you have to be to attend?" THEN I realized, OHHHH this isn't for the old, it's a celebration of the "good old days" for all ages. Locals often refer to it as Pioneer Days. Ferndale's Pioneer Park holds 14 authentic cedar-slab cabins dating from the late 1800s, which is the largest known collection of this early architecture. During the annual Old Settler's Picnic volunteer interpreters wear pioneer costumes and give free tours of each cabin, while food and craft vendors abound on the park lawn. A talent show and music take place on the stage from noon to 9 p.m. On Saturday, a grand parade marches down Ferndale's Main Street at 11 a.m., showing off floats, fire trucks and vintage cars. A classic car show also takes place beginning at noon that day. And a beer garden is a highlight in the evening. This is great family entertainment - and educational too! Spread the word and visit Ferndale in late July. For directions to Pioneer Park visit www.ferndaleheritagesociety.com.
